Ping! Is that the sound of your Social Network’s worth declining?

By kevinmhuff

Ping.fm just launched its beta version and my first thought was, “Cool!”

According to Ping.fm, “Ping.fm is a simple service that makes updating your social networks a snap.”  And so far, it has worked quite well for me.

About 30 minutes after signing up, I realized with Ping.fm, I can quit visiting my Social Network’s sites … and I’ll assume at some point you will quit as well … which leads me to believe if we quit spending time building our Social Network (it takes two!) then quite possibly, Ping.fm is devaluing our existing Social Networks’ worth.

What drives value in a Social Network?  I propose both in person and online, it is driven by two-way participation.  The value to a specific Social Network’s management organization is likely marketing revenue through advertising, etc.

As I look at what Ping.fm offers, I believe both the value IN a Social Network, and earned FROM a Social Network both decline as people move their updates to a new tool like Ping.fm.

What do you think?
